Ten Tips for Finding Inspiration at Work

Unchallenged, bored, in a rut at work? How can you find your inspiration and motivation again? Here are my top ten tips:

  1. Revisit your WHY! Some question to ask yourself:
    • Why did you get into this profession/career/job/organisation to start with?
    • What did you hope to achieve?
    • What satisfaction did it provide?
    • Are you remaining true to your initial hopes and dreams, is the work providing the same satisfaction it once did?
    • Has it changed, have you changed or perhaps both?
    • How would you like it to be?
    • Can you achieve this in your current role or workplace?
    • Do you need a change of role or workplace?
    • Do you need a change of attitude to embrace where you are?
  2. Approach with creativity; sketch how it is and how you would like it to be. You can use any other creative option that you enjoy; think art, craft, poetry, creative writing, photography, sticky notes or whatever appeals to you, explore it.
  3. Take a break or a holiday, which can sometimes provide a new perspective.
  4. Read a book that might help or provide encouragement i.e. a self-development book, a career self-help book, a biography of someone in a similar career or someone you regard as role-model. Take a browse at your local bookstore or Amazon for some ideas.
  5. Practice or learn yoga, meditation or mindfulness and see what an impact it has in your life and career.
  6. Go to a special place that inspires you e.g. walk in nature or on the beach to clear your mind and rejuvenate your body and mind and provide some insights and stimulation.
  7. Try to new activity or hobby, perhaps one that isn’t a strength or perhaps just something you have always wanted to try and have a bit of fun with it without any pressure to perform or do well.
  8. Journal your thoughts and feelings on a regular basis.
  9. Speak to a role model / mentor or someone you respect either in your workplace or outside and ask them how they overcome staleness in the workplace, maintained their motivation or dealt with hiccups in their career.
  10. Be witty; use humour to see the funny side of the situation. There is always amusement to be found within the serious. A good belly laugh can be very therapeutic too.

Love always
